Basel's temperate climate makes it possible to pursue the widest-possible range of summer as well as winter activities. The progression in mainstream sports has been enormous during the last two decades, for this reason, there is a correspondingly broad range of sporting opportunities on offer. A variety of extremely popular mainstream sporting events continue to underline the continuing boom.

Amateur sportsmen and sportswomen on all levels and of all age groups can pursue the widest possible variety of sports, either individually or in groups. The sheer range of sporting opportunities is inexhaustible, and is pursued with the greatest enthusiasm; from martial arts to all types of water sports (including on the Rhine), from light athletics through cross-country runs to jogging, from tennis through badminton to squash, from baseball through rugby to basketball, from the different ski sports through ice skating to curling, from bowling through billiards to darts, from motocross through go-karts to motor racing, from beach volleyball through paragliding to inline skating or from riding to golf - and much, much more..
Trekking, jogging, fitness and bicycling
There are 50'000 kilometres of trekking routes in Switzerland, and north-western Switzerland has its fair share of them. These provide ideal terrain for joggers, family excursions, aspiring alpine mountaineers and free-climbers, who find the Jura, in particular, ideal. Many enthusiasts jog or inline skate in the city itself, or along the Rhine and its tributaries, through the parks and green belt areas such as "Lange Erlen" or "Grün 80". Fitness clubs and health centres, some of which have thermal baths (e.g. in the neighbouring town of Rheinfelden), are also popular.
Basel is a world-class cycling city, leading the way even on an international level; bicycles are used not just by teenagers on their way to school or by employees going to work, senior members of the government and top managers are also frequently seen on their bicycles. In a city of such compact dimensions, the bicycle is more a means of transport than a piece of sport equipment, but can also be used for excursions through the attractive countryside and nearby recreational areas.
Golf, skiing and flying
The pitch & putt golfing facility "CityGolf Basel", located on the grounds of the public swimming pool Bachgraben, offers infrastructure suitable to beginners as well as active golfers. While no full-size golf courses are located directly on the territory of the canton, there are several just a short distance from the city. Golf courses as for example in Alsace and in the Black Forest are extremely popular. The Black Forest also offers opportunities for winter sports - and the hills around Basel itself are sometimes snow-covered, too. Major winter sport centres in Switzerland can be reached in just 90 minutes by car. Private aircraft can be flown either at the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg or at other airfields in the region. Parachute jumps can also be organised. The nearby mountain ranges offer ideal conditions for hang-gliding.
Popular sporting events
The highlights of the fully loaded mainstream sports calendar are: In spring the World Inline Cup is being held in Basel and offers the opportunity for professionals and beginners alike to skate through the city. In the summer, a swimming event is held on the Rhine during which thousands of swimmers plunge simultaneously into the clean floods of the river and in the winter the Basel city run is held, when the city is lit up with Christmas decorations, an impressive and typical example of the successful symbiosis between popular and professional sport.
Sportamt Basel (Office for sports)
The Office for sports is the central contact point in the Canton Basel-Stadt for the area of sport and movement and takes care of all sorts of issues relating to that area.
The aim of the Office for sports is to motivate the Basel population to pursue sports and movement and to lay the foundations for each inhabitant to be able to thrive within his/her chosen sport.
Gsünder Basel (Healthier Basel)
The purpose of the non-profit organization "Gsünder Basel" is the advancement, sustainment and improvement of a healthy lifestyle, achieved through concrete offerings such as classes, projects, activities and services. The adult population of both Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft as well as specific groups are targeted. "Gsünder Basel" would especially like to motivate as yet sedate people to more movement and relaxation as well as to a balanced diet.
