Infrastructure
|
|
|
A modern, smoothly-functioning infrastructure is the essential precondition for success in the field of high-performance sport, as well as for the mainstream sporting activities of the wider population. The canton encourages the development of this infrastructure; the sports stadium complex at St. Jakob is a unique structure of national importance.

High-performance sport facilities
Another impressive sign of the commitment of the region to high-performance sport are the facilities grouped together at "St. Jakob" in the immediate vicinity of the new football (soccer) stadium: the large multipurpose sports hall (which is also very popular for major events), a multi-sport swimming pool complex, tennis courts and countless football pitches, a light athletics stadium a ice stadium and an equestrian stadium (at which races are regularly held, and where bets can be placed). These make 'St. Jakob' a world-class sporting venue.
Mainstream sport facilities
Numerous public sports facilities, some indoor and some outdoor, are popular meeting places for families and the general public: countless football pitches and gymnasiums, swimming pools, ice skating rinks, tennis facilities, go-cart tracks, bowling and billiard centres, mini golf courses etc. Many of the major corporations in the region also maintain in-house sports facilities and clubs. Basel offers ideal facilities for amateur sportsmen and sportswomen everywhere.
Organisation, juniors and seniors
Sport tends to be organised into regional and national associations which organise league tables and championships, which lay down the rules of the game, and which establish links to national and international structures. Great efforts are made to encourage junior talent, and many of these associations also have junior departments for children. Here they exercise an important social function. The government's "Ressort Sport" (Sport Office) helps the private sport sector with targeted support programmes in a wide variety of areas - from youth sport to senior sport. With a few exceptions, the "Ressort Sport" also manages all the sports facilities in the canton.
