Swiss school system
The central government lays down only broad, general guidelines for the school systems of the individual Swiss cantons. This has led to decentralised, correspondingly varied approaches and solutions.

Responsibility of the cantons
The school system in Switzerland is run on a cantonal level, so there can be variations between the school systems of different cantons. Only the start of the school year in mid August and the high standards demanded of education have been standardised at national level.
Similar structures
The various cantonal systems have basic similarities: a four to six-year period of primary school precedes a three to four-year secondary level l. Following this, at secondary level II pupils can attend education institutions offering further general education (diploma schools), a vocational school or a grammar school. The compulsory school period is 9 years.
