Campus Basel
|
|
|
Basel is the centre of a region which probably has a globally-unique density of research specialists. Not just within the campus or the university faculties, but for example in the St. Johann quarter as well. It is there that a CHF 600 million project is seeing the construction of the new headquarters of the pharmaceuticals giant Novartis: the "Campus of Knowledge".

"Where science..."
Research activities are almost ubiquitous in Basel. Not just at the university - although the research activities pursued there are certainly broadly-based. The Bio Centre for example, is one of the world's leading institutes in the field of biotechnology. This is amply demonstrated by the regularly-collated "Citation Index", where the Bio Centre is always amongst the leaders. Directly adjacent to the university campus is the newly-built Pharmaceutical Centre. Effective use is made of all available synergies here, not just with locally-based businesses, but also with its partner institute in Zurich: a pioneering co-operation within the Swiss university community which shows that networking can be more than just an empty slogan.
In order to strengthen Basel's position as a life sciences and research centre, the university and the two Basel cantons are keen to promote the establishment of an ETH Institute for System Biology in Basel. This is a developing discipline, and is viewed as the life sciences topic of the future. As with the foundation of the Bio Centre 40 years ago, for this purpose a pioneering research concept has been drawn up, encompassing an independent, forward-looking, scientifically-relevant and new research speciality.
"...drives business ..."
Research for its own sake is desirable and effective at the university level. Universities of applied science, by contrast, concentrate on practical applications. The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) pursues application-focused and pragmatic research objectives. Today, the Swiss economy is more than ever dependent upon this approach. For this reason the modern and well-equipped Office of Technology Transfer of the University and the University of Applied Sciences has a key role to play. This provides researchers with support when it comes to finding commercial applications for their results and ensures that the exchange with the business community is realised in a legally correct and equitable manner to the benefit of both sides.
Basel - where global corporations are at home
And of course, this environment offers the globally-active pharmaceutical companies Novartis and Roche, the agrochemical company Syngenta or the companies Ciba Specialty Chemicals and Clariant an ideal operating environment where they can thrive and grow.
