Basel's Roman Catholics live in parishes, organized into eleven German-speaking parishes, one francophone, and one Italian-speaking one. There are also two chaplaincy offices, one each for Spanish- and Serbocroat-speakers. Other foreign-language chaplaincies are organized on a regional basis.
Cantonal services
In addition to the parishes, there are also various services organized on a cantonal basis:
- University community
- Cantonal Young Peoples Chaplaincy
- WegZeichen Catholic adult-education centre on Bundesstrasse 18
- Catholic Adult Education
- Hospital chaplaincy
Religious education in schools is organized jointly with the cantonal Protestant Church.
Ecumenical institutions
The following are organized on an ecumenical basis:
- Pastorate for Trade and Industry
- AIDS pastorate
- Elisabethen Open Church
- Prison chaplaincy
The deanery forms part of the diocese
The parishes and the cantonal services between them make up the diocese of Basel City which is responsible for the spiritual care of the Roman Catholics in the canton. At its head is the Bishop of Basel.
At the same time, the Roman Catholic Church, officially recognized as a public-law institution, is also organized as a cantonal church. The Synod is the cantonal churchs parliament which elects the Church Council. This is responsible for dealing with all matters that lie within the ambit of the cantonal church: finance, recruitment, buildings, church administration, and external relations. The central services are responsible for dealing with all administrative tasks.
