Basel: a good place to live

Basel is an attractive place to live and work. The city and its two satellite municipalities, Riehen and Bettingen, offer a wide choice of locations to meet the most varied individual needs and budgets.

Basel is considered a green city, with at least one park in every neighbourhood. Favoured areas are the beautiful, well-preserved old town centre; the housing corridors on the banks of the Rhine; the Gellert district; the Bruderholz; and the two satellite municipalities, Riehen and Bettingen, located on an attractive plateau.
The northern and western areas of the city have a more industrial urban character and include the main transit-traffic arteries. The east and south, on the other hand, are mainly residential, with a high proportion of single-family houses and their gardens.
The three-nations conurbation, with its half a million inhabitants, is still growing. Because of their vicinity to the green belt and good transport facilities, the adjacent suburban areas themselves grown into veritable towns are also favoured residential areas, yet have managed to keep their independent, historically developed character, and avoided turning into mere dormitory satellites.
In the 1960s, the great exodus began from the city to the green belt. But lately, there have been signs of a trend change, with the motto back to town. The large-scale project Logis Bâle (housing in Basel), whose aim is to create 5000 high-quality apartments designed for families, is giving further impetus to this development
