Basel offers an immensely wide choice of places of interest, from museums to churches, modern architecture, and art in public places. A tour of the city allows one to visit some of Basels best-known sights.

Basel is best explored on foot. That is particularly true of the old town, where many of the places of interest are very near one another. As one strolls through its streets and lanes, there is many a fountain on whose edge one can pause and rest, or a bench to sit on while enjoying at leisure a view of old houses, quiet corners, and a charming townscape.
Official tours of the old town
There are five officially sign-posted tours of Basel's old town. All start on the Marktplatz (Market Square). Each carries a portrait in colour of an historical person, and takes about three-quarters of an hour to an hour and a half (Flyer). In addition, iGuides (mini-computers) can be booked at the Basel Tourismus tourist information office in the Stadtcasino on Barfüsserplatz. By hundreds of photos and additional information, the iGuide adds an almost unprecedented new dimension to the guided tour.
Guided tours and excursions
Tourist Information Basel has a large number of competent city guides. All year around it offers a wide choice of guided tours. On Thursday there is also a guided tour of the Rathaus (Town Hall); on Sundays there is an excursion accompanied by a guide in Augusta Raurica, a Roman site.
