Founded 1890-1892 together with the rebuilding by the Cantonal Architect Heinrich Reese (1842-1919) of the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule (General School of Trade) which was founded in 1796 as the Zeichnungs- und Modellierschule (School of Drawing and Sculpture); the site was originally occupied by the monastery church of Gnadental which was converted into a granary in 1574 (museum closed in 1995).
