Built 1844-49 by Melchior Berri (1801-54) in place of the Augustinian Monastery dating from the Middle Ages, originally a multipurpose building (accommodating a library and university institutes, assembly hall, art collection, natural science collections).
Figurative frieze by the Schaffhausen sculptor Johann Jakob Oechslin (1802-73). The staircase contains frescos by Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901), executed 1868-70.
