Built 1853 by Johann Jakob Stehlin the Younger (1826-94) in place of the city merchants' hall of 1376-78 which was renovated around 1580.
The entrance arch is a relict of the old merchants' hall (approx. 1580) that originally stood on the Gerbergasse.
