The oldest sections of the building date from the 12th century. In 1284 used as a corn mill owned by the Klingental Monastery. In 1453 converted into a paper mill by Antonio Gallician. 1550-1763 owned by the papermaking family Thüring.
1978-80 restored and established as the Swiss Paper Museum with paper mill.
