Built in the mid 12th century by the monks of St. Albankloster as a commercial canal branched off from the River Birs. At the end of the 13th century, 12 mills had already become established along its banks. These were built in pairs on the lower course of the two Dych arms, and were used as grain mills and sawmills, and later also as hammer mills, grinding mills and paper mills.
