St. Elisabeth Church (Elisabethenkirche)

Built 1857-65 to the designs of Ferdinand Stadler (1813-70) under the direction of Christoph Riggenbach (1810-63) and Carl Wartner (1817-91). Endowed by Christoph Merian (1800-56) and his wife Margaretha Merian-Burckhardt (1806-86) as a "bulwark against the spiritlessness of the age" in place of a chapel erected in 1516.
Most important neo-gothic church in Switzerland, with intact interior fittings. Stained glass windows by Heinrich (1823-1906) and Christian (1824-93) Burkhardt from Munich.
Protestant church.
