The Franciscan Order established themselves in Basel in 1231. First church built 1253-56. Destroyed by fire in 1297, the church was rebuilt during the first half of the 14th century, and rebuilt again following the earthquake of 1356. Used 1799-1815 as a warehouse for fruit and salt. Converted for use as a shop in 1843 by Christoph Riggenbach (1810-63). 1890-94 establishment of the Historische Museum (Historical Museum), and choir vaults.
1975-81 restoration and renovation of the church, including the widening of the aisles on the west façade and reconstruction of the choir screen, as well as refurbishment of the museum. Most important example of Franciscan architecture in the Upper Rhine region.
