Originally, the River Birsig flowed in an open channel through the city. Many trades thrived along its banks. However, the people whose houses backed directly onto the Birsig used the river to dispose of all their waste and rubbish. The toilet extensions built onto the façades of the buildings also flowed directly into the Birsig. The result was floods and epidemics.
