The statue of Johannes Oekolampad (1482-1531), a leading figure during the Reformation in Basel, stands in the Rittergasse. The clear and intelligible sermons he gave in the St Martins Church (Martinskirche) did much to promote the Protestant Faith in Basel. Following the Reformation (1529), Johannes Oekolampad became the Principal of the Reformed Church in Basel.
The sandstone figure is a copy of a statue created by the Zug-based sculpture Ludwig Keiser in 1862.
