The memorial to the Alemannic dialect poet Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1826) was unveiled in the year 1899. He was born in Basel, and at the age of 31 went to Karlsruhe to work as a theologian and teacher. He wrote poems in the Alemannic dialect in recollection of his younger days. He is also famous for his calendar stories, which he composed over many years for the journal "Rheinischen Hausfreund".
