As a rejoinder to the block-like roof of the old securities exchange, in 1906 the architects Robert Bischof and Hermann Weidel created a roof for the building on the opposite side of the street adorned with Jugendstil elements. The artist Hans Arp, who died in Basel in 1966, had his atelier behind the huge window on the top floor. The painter and sculptor was a founder member of the Dada Movement.
