Basel's first postage stamp, the "Baslerdybli", was introduced in the year 1845. It was the world's first three-colour, embossed postage stamp. The stamp was designed by the architect Melchior Berri (1801 - 1854), who also created corresponding letterboxes with the same motif. Today six copies of these decorative letterboxes are still in use.
