A fortified gate stood originally at the Grossbasel end of the Mittlere Brücke. In 1640 a mechanical head was mounted on the façade facing the Rhine, the Lällekönig ("lälli" is a Basel word for "tongue"). The copper-beaten head with a many-pointed crown was connected to a clockwork mechanism which at regular intervals made the Lällekönig roll his eyes and stick out his long red tongue towards the Kleinbasel side of the city. Today the original is displayed at the Historical Museum (Historische Museum).
