The right-hand arch of the central arcade of the Town Hall (Rathaus) bears a mark which shows how high the waters of the Birsig reached during the great floods of 1529 and 1530. The River Birsig is a tributary of the Rhine which flows from the south through the low-lying part of the city. Today the Birsig is nowhere to be seen, as it is channelled underground through the entire city centre.
