The large fountain beneath the horse chestnut trees on the Münsterplatz was created in 1784 by Paolo Antonio Pisoni. The fountain is considered the most attractive example of a so-called Zopfbrunnen (braid fountain) - not just in Switzerland, but in the whole of Southern Germany.
The braid style was a popular decorative motif during the transition from Rococo to Classicism, when the civic, sober Age of Enlightenment came to the fore.
