The Association Experiencing Basel

The association "Experiencing Basel", founded in 2001, initiates and supports activities of the City and Region of Basel in various public and private domains. It is its firm intention to reach the goals in close collaboration with the relevant state and private agencies. After their completion, the projects are handed over to the corresponding state or private institutions.

The Projects

The association Experiencing Basel initiated so far three projects and supported them up to their successful introduction:

1.City Walks
The association Experiencing Basel has restored in 2001 the five city walks of Basel, which were initially established about 20 years ago - in conjunction with the garden-show G80. The local signs of the walks as well as the routing has been updated to today's standards. In addition, a handy flyer has been developed which describes in brief commentaries the five walks and shows on a overleaf map the corresponding routing. The flyers can be obtained (in four languages) from the Basel Tourist Office. Due to the high demand for these flyers, they had to be reprinted several times for each language and their overall circulation number totals by now well over 100'000 copies.

The project "City Walks" has been supported by the following institutions: GGG, HEIVISCH, Novartis, Theo Ballmer&Partner, the Stadtmarketing Basel and the Canton of Basel-City.

2. Virtual City Tours
The virtual city walks are derived from the original five city walks - however, they can be downloaded world-wide from the internet at www.bs.ch . They are based on and integrated into the "Virtual City", which was developed by the Stadmarketing Basel. This is an exclusive showcase of the city of Basel, which allows the guests to experience our city even before they have arrived here. In the first half year after their initiation in September 2002, they have been visited in the internet already well over 1'500'000 times!

The "Virtual City Walks" have been supported by the CMS, GGG, HEIVISCH, Novartis, the Stadtmarketing Basel and the Canton of Basel-City.

3. Guided Tours through the City Hall of Basel for blind men and women
In close co-operation with the Blind Institution and the School for Visually Impaired Men and Women in Basel, the association Experiencing Basel created a guided tour through the City Hall of Basel for blind and visually impaired men and women. Such a concept is up to now unique in Switzerland and is aimed to familiarize blind and visually impaired men and women with the City Hall mainly by means of "touchable" objects such as a 1:100 scale model of the City Hall and full scale plaster replicas of sculptures. In addition, several rooms are visited and explanations to the past history and the present function of the City Hall are given by experienced guides.

The Project "Guided Tours through the City Hall" has been supported by the GGG, HEIVISCH and Novartis.

The association Experiencing Basel wishes to express its gratitude to these institutions. Without their help, these projects would not have been realized.
