Part of the city wall erected around Basel after the earthquake of 1356. Fortifications and central tower probably date from the 15th century. The Letzi Wall at the Rhine end of the defensive ditch dates from 1676, as does the Letzi Tower.
Restored 1978-1980 with the financial support of the Christoph Merian Foundation as well as with the help of the Swiss State, and placed under the protection of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and the Swiss State.
