The music scene in Basel functions according to the classical division: classical music, jazz and modern. In Basel a high-ranking and comprehensive classical music programme has been offered for many years. Furthermore, every year several renowned international festivals take place in Basel.

Wide choice of classical music events
Classical concerts are often given in antique churches or in the Stadtcasino, which houses a music hall, built in 1876, that offers extraordinary acoustics. Next to high-ranking local ensembles such as the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra Basel or the Basel Sinfonietta, international orchestras and soloists also perform here regularly. The music academy has an excellent international reputation and disposes of concert halls. A big part of the classical music events is being supported by the "Allgemeinen Musikgesellschaft, AMG", founded in 1876. Basel also accommodates the Paul Sacher Foundation, one of the most important autograph collections in the world, with works of Strawinsky amongst others.
Jazz, Rock & Pop
Various clubs as well as a string of festivals which range from dixie, swing, classical jazz up to avant-garde are devoted to jazz. The Jazz School of Basel is part of the well-known music academy. As far as rock and pop are concerned, various smaller clubs in the city's centre as well as the "Kaserne" in Kleinbasel are active in this sector. Major events with up to 50'000 visitors are being held in the football stadium St. Jakobs-Park.
Active music scene, graffitis
About 300 bands, a dozen music studios and many DJs provide a diverse and lively trendy music scene covering rock, techno and hip-hop. The well-known graffitis at the Basel train station gateway are attributed to the local hip-hop scene.
