The Schaulager is a new kind of art venue, neither a museum nor a traditional warehouse. Here every single work, every object and every installation of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation's collection is on permanent display. However, the Schaulager is also a unique place, offering a different perspective of art and a different way of thinking about art. A place at which the collection will be a starting point for creativity and activity, of learning and enjoyment.

The Schaulager addresses primarily a specialist audience, that is to say, museum staff, restorers, curators, researchers, students and teachers. However, occasional exhibitions, special events and two monumental permanent installations by Katharina Fritsch and Robert Gober mean the Schaulager will also be accessible to the wider public from time to time.

Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation
The Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation was founded in 1933 by Maja Hoffmann-Stehlin, subsequently Maja Sacher (1898-1989), for the purpose of continuing the commitment that her husband, who died tragically young, developed for contemporary art. Right from the outset, Maja Sacher rigorously pursued the three principal objectives of her Foundation: the collection, conservation and promotion of modern art. In 1941 she put the collection on permanent loan to the Basel Museum of Fine Art, and in 1980 she initiated and made possible the world';s first Museum for Contemporary Art.

The collection has been continuously expanded and has become so extensive that today only a small proportion of the works can be shown at the Museum of Fine Art or the Museum for Contemporary Art. Once again, the Schaulager represents an entirely new concept - in accordance with goals pursued by Maja Sacher - for the promotion of contemporary art. The Schaulager has been made possible by the Laurenz Foundation, founded in 1999, which has built and which operates the Schaulager.

The collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation
The collection that forms the heart of the Schaulager currently comprises works and groups of works from over 150 artists. The collection's leading items - by Arp, Dalí, Delaunay, Klee, Ernst or by Belgian expressionists - have long been recognised as modern classics and have their firm place in the history of art.

The Schaulager
The architects Herzog & de Meuron have created an extraordinary space for the Schaulager. Their remit was to create a warehouse which would be used for the public storage of contemporary art under optimum climatic conditions, and which could be opened to the public on particular occasions. Furthermore, the building was intended to be a centre for conservation, research and the provision of information. Instead of merely being an anonymous warehouse, the substantial building has been carefully designed to create a particular and unique location.

The external shape of the warehouse derives from the internal storage configuration and the statutory boundaries of the plot of land upon which it is built. The external walls consist of layers of roughened concrete, formed from the material which was excavated to make way for the building's foundations. These layers of material also play a decisive role in regulating the internal climatic conditions. The entrance façade features two large LED screens. These are conveying images and information to the outside.
