Music Museum (Basel History Museum)

Since November 2000, Switzerland's biggest collection of musical instruments has been on view in the historic Lohnhof. At last, for the first time, this now makes it possible to show all its treasures in full. The instruments are exhibited in their historical and social context.

Since November 2000, Switzerland's biggest collection of musical instruments has been shown in a wider context based on a new approach. The new Music Museum replaces the former Collection of Musical Instruments that had been on display almost unchanged since 1957. Meanwhile the collection had more than doubled in size. Among the highlights are some of the famous centres of instrument manufacture, instruments with close links to Basel, and brass instruments in general.

Each of the three exhibition floors is devoted to a particular theme and shows the instruments in their proper relationship to one another: on the ground floor, Music in Basel shows musical instruments through five centuries, in their musical and social context; on the first floor, the different musical forms Concerts, Choral Music, and Dance determine the grouping of the instruments; and the third floor Parades, Festivals, and Signals focuses on the events at which certain instruments were played.

The visitor can also experience the world of instruments by listening. There are musical examples on each theme, and more in-depth information is available electronically on monitors in English, French, and German.

The museum occupies a building listed as a cultural and historical monument. The exhibition floors have therefore kept the spatial layout of the prison established in 1835 and closed in 1995. The entire building complex goes back to the St Leonard monastery, Basels first church building, founded by Augustinian canons in the twelfth century.
