Basel's historical museum is recognised to be the most important museum for the cultural history of the Upper Rhine. Highlights include the Basel Cathedral treasury, late Gothic tapestry carpets, Basel's Dance of Death, ecclesiastical art and furniture.

The core element of the collection in the Barfüsserkirche (former church) is the Amerbach Cabinet, which the city opened to the public in 1661, making it the very first civic museum open to the public. The highlights include the Basel Cathedral Treasury unique specimens of the medieval goldsmiths art newly shown since October 1999, late Gothic tapestry carpets, Basel's Dance of Death, treasures of Basels guilds, the coin cabinet, Upper-Rhenish graphic works and late Gothic and Renaissance glass painting, ecclesiastical art and furniture.
