The Basel Museum of Antiquities has a underground department of Egyptian Art. This second major structural extension was financed by the UBS bank and has enabled the Museum of Antiquities to become a museum of ancient Mediterranean cultures.
Egypt, Hellas, Etruria, and Rom
The Egyptian collection shows a cross-section of ancient Egyptian art from various public collections in Switzerland and, above all, on long-term loans from private collectors. There are also some superb examples of Egyptian sculptures on permanent loan from London's British Museum. But it focuses not only on the three great periods in Egyptian art; there are also exhibits from Ptolemaic and Coptic Egypt.
Basel's Museum of Antiquities is thus the only museum in Switzerland to combine under one roof exhibits from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Greece, Etruria, and Rome.
