In summer 2001, the Basel Museum of Ancient Art, until then mainly devoted to the art of ancient Greece and Rome, opened a new department exclusively dedicated to Egyptian art. This new wing, though not historically grown, gives an exhausting insight into the private and public collections of Egyptian art in Switzerland. Furthermore, the Basel Museum is able to show 16 masterpieces of Egyptian sculpture, some of them of large size, coming as long-term loans from the British Museum in London. The Basel Museum of Ancient Art is the only museum in Switzerland presenting under the same roof objects from four of the most important ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean area: Greece, the Etruscans, Rome and Egypt.
Highlights are the exceptional selection of Greek vases and the sculpture collection. Other noteworthy exhibits include outstanding bronze statuettes, gold jewellery and terracottas.
