Bettingen: smallest municipality and highest point
|
|
|
Bettingen is the smallest municipality in the canton of Basel City. It lies between Riehen and St Chrischona, embedded in a sheltered basin between Ausserberg, Linsberg, and Kaiser, and surrounded by meadows and woodlands.

he highest point in the canton of Basel City, crowned by the church of St Chrischona, lies in the territory of Bettingen and proudly rises to 522 metres above mean sea level. With its 1200 inhabitants, Bettingen is the smaller of the cantons two rural municipalities.
Switzerland's tallest structure
Bettingen iTs also widely known for its 250 metres tall Chrischona transmission tower, Switzerlands tallest structure, which stands on Bettingen land. From this vantage point, even without the tower, a panorama opens before the visitors eyes that stretches from Jura to Säntis and the Bernese Alps.
Chrischona church
A favourite place for visitors is the Chrischona church that stands above the village itself. This former place of pilgrimage now houses the Protestant Pilgrims Mission and a clinic.
Finally, Bettingen also has one of the oddities particular to the Basel region: the municipality's border with Germany is longer than that with Switzerland.
